Planning your bathroom

What type of hot water system do you have?

Gravity fed
  Combination boiler
  Mains pressure cylinder (unvented)

This will affect the types of showers and taps you may choose, for example if you are looking for a high performance shower and have a gravity fed system, a pumped shower may be the best solution. Many European brands work best on high pressure systems; we can advise on the options available.

Electrics

To comply with IEE Wiring Regulations, any electrical work carried out in your home must be carried out by a qualified electrician and installation certificates must be provided. For bathroom installations, RCD protection, earthing and suitability of the fuse board may need to be reviewed.

If you are building an en-suite in an existing room or a new extension, you need to consider the following:

The position of the waste pipes
The position of the hot and cold feeds
The source of the electric supply

Are you having wall hung sanitary ware? If so you will require space for a hidden frame and cistern in the wall to avoid unnecessary boxing.

Are you having back to wall sanitary ware? If so you will require space for a hidden cistern in the wall to avoid unnecessary boxing.

Tiled floor to ceiling
  Tiled half height
  Tiled splashbacks
  Waterproof shower panels

Do you have space for a separate shower enclosure and bath?
Do you require just a bath?
Do you require just an enclosure or shower bath?

Who is going to use the room and how often will it be used

Is it the main bathroom or ensuite?
Is it a secondary bathroom or ensuite?
Is it a guest bathroom or ensuite?
  Is it a cloakroom?

Are you seeking the minimalist look or do you require some kind of furniture to keep items in, for example

A run of fitted wall hung or freestanding furniture with basin and w. c. included
A run of fitted wall hung or freestanding furniture separate to the basin and w. c. suite.
  A stand-alone vanity unit
  Wall mounted cabinets
  Floor standing cabinets

What kind of lighting do you require?

Downlights
Spotlights on a bar or disc
  Surface mounted ceiling lights
  Overhead/side mirror lighting
  Floor lighting
  Concealed lighting in walls

Do not forget to consider the Zone rating of light fittings in order to comply with the current IEE wiring regulations and building regulations

Tiled
  Vinyl floor tiles e.g. Karndean
  Anti slip

Do you have a central heating system or an electric only system, or both?

Do you want to keep the existing heating source and install an additional heated towel rail

Do you want to replace the existing heating source with a heated towel rail

Do you want the towel rail run off the heating system, the electric system or a mixture of both.

Do you require underfloor heating (recommended if having a tiled floor)
Blue Square Is an extractor fan required and where can it be positioned?
